El volcán Sakurajima, muy cercano, cubre a veces la ciudad con cenizas; además, Kokubu-matsuki fue pionera en Japón en el cultivo de camote dulce en humedales, hoy una importante tradición agrícola local.
Evolución histórica: Kokubu-matsuki desarrolló una economía agrícola, luego industrial tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, convirtiéndose en un polo regional de manufactura relacionada al ferrocarril, con fuerte influencia de la modernización del sur de Japón, experimentando crecimientos demográficos tras la fusión con Kirishima.
Personajes importantes: Ryoma Sakamoto influyó en la región durante la Restauración Meiji, y el poeta local Tetsuya Fujimoto es conocido por capturar el paisaje de Kagoshima en su obra.
